Saint Barthélemy, Gustavia

Saint-Barthélemy is an island in the Antilles. The island was claimed by France in 1648. In 1784 it was sold to Sweden in exchange for some commercial rights in the port of Gothenburg. Sweden ruled it for almost a century, until 1878 when it was sold back to France. The island’s capital, Gustavia, is named after King Gustav III of Sweden. Since 22 February 2007, it has been a French overseas community of 6,852 inhabitants.
