Mauritius, Port Louis

Port Louis is the capital and main city of Mauritius. Located on the Indian Ocean, it is the first port of the country and is the second financial center of Africa after Johannesburg.

An early settlement in the Port Louis area was created by the Dutch, under the name “Noordt Wester Haven”; but only under the French, from 1735, Port Louis became a real city and was promoted to capital.

The name of Port Louis was chosen by the first governor Count Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, in honor of King Louis XV.
