Guadeloupe, Pointe a Pitre

The Guadeloupe is an island in the Antilles. Along with its smaller neighbors, it has been a French Overseas Department since 1946 and a French overseas region since 1983. Two districts are included in the Region, 40 cantons and 32 municipalities.
The department consists of the island of Guadeloupe (1434 km² and 384,264 inhabitants.), the island of Marie-Galante (158 km²), the Iles de Saintes (13 km²), the Désirade (23 km²). Saint-Barthélemy (21 km²) and the northern part of St. Martin (54 km²) were part of the Guadeloupe islands until July 15th 2007, the southern area of St Martin being part of the Netherlands Antilles.
