The Gemini Cooperation, a new alliance between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk, will officially begin on February 1, 2025, marking a shift in the global maritime transport sector.
After the delay imposed by the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), the agreement aims to ensure greater reliability in a sector that has been unstable due to global events since 2020.
With a combined market share of 25%, Gemini seeks to redefine global logistics by adopting a hub-and-spoke operational model and increasing transshipment networks to 45%.
The stated goal is to improve service reliability to 90%, well above the current global average of 53%, addressing delays and port congestion that have plagued the sector.
The alliance, born from the end of the historic partnership between Maersk and MSC, aims to offer innovative solutions to counter MSC’s dominance.
After receiving FMC approval on September 9, 2024, Gemini is preparing to become a key player, consolidating the positions of Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk and pushing the entire industry toward higher standards of efficiency and resilience.
