Mauritius, Port Louis

Port Louis is the capital and main city of Mauritius. Located in the Indian Ocean, it  is the first port in the country and the second financial center in Africa after Johannesburg.

The first settlement in the area of Port Louis was established by the Dutch, as “Noordt Wester Haven”, but only under the French, as from 1735, did Port Louis became a real city and became the principal port.

The name  Port Louis was chosen by the first governor Count Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, in honor of King Louis XV.
