Martinique is an island of the Antilles, region and French oversea department (capital Fort-de-France).
It is located in the heart of the Caribbean and is part of the Lesser Antilles or Windward Islands. Its coasts are bathed by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and west by the Caribbean Sea.
It was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502, during his fourth voyage to the New World.
Martinique boasts many beaches: those of the southern island are of white sand, while those of the north are of volcanic origin with black or gray sand.
